Flames flared Thursday evening in an apartment in Vienna’s Margareten district. The owner of the apartment managed to escape just in time with his dog. Thick smoke quickly spread in the stairwell – 23 residents had to be called out of bed in the middle of the night and taken to safety.
When emergency services arrived at Ziegelofengasse around 3 a.m., flames erupted from two street-facing windows on the first floor of the five-story building. The homeowner had already brought himself to safety. After receiving medical attention, he was taken to a hospital. His dog was taken in by animal rescue.
In the meantime, however, the fire threatened to spread to the floors above. 23 residents had to be removed from the building for safety reasons. Some of those affected wore only underwear and were brought out with escape filter masks by various respiratory protection teams. They were all unharmed.
Apartment completely destroyed by fire
The emergency services fought the flames from the outside and inside with two extinguishing lines with respiratory protection. The smoke was eventually pushed out of the house and apartments with powerful fans. Using thermal imaging cameras, individual embers were located and extinguished. The residents were allowed to go home around 4:45 a.m. However, the fire apartment was a theft of the flames.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, the Ziegelofengasse was closed for the duration of the operation.
