Insufficient staff – nurses worried: supply “reduced”

Date:

In a needs analysis by the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences, two-thirds of nursing staff surveyed across Austria stated that patient care is suffering from the lack of staff in hospitals. There is insufficient staff for adequate continuity of care.

The majority of those surveyed would also like to be more involved in hospital decisions, according to the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences Ministry of Health. The challenges in healthcare currently lead to problems in recruiting and long-term retention of qualified personnel, emphasizes Nadine Graf, program director of the FH.

In 2017, 67,000 people still worked in the senior health and nursing service, in 2021 only 61,200. An additional need of 75,700 people is expected by 2030. Given the shortage of nurses, it is too late to ask about the needs of the nursing staff.

Respondents see a lot of room for improvement
In addition to working hours and psychological strain, many nursing staff see room for improvement when it comes to participation. According to the FH, only 12 percent believe they can work in staff positions. There were also many requests for more dialogue with the nursing directorate. On the other hand, 60 percent of those surveyed viewed the opportunities for professional development as positive. 77 percent saw a clearly defined philosophy of care in their facility and 63 percent had at least partially structured onboarding processes.

From April 12 to May 8, a total of 2,954 people were surveyed, nearly 82 percent of whom work as nursing staff. According to the FH, the other participants included employees of the basic and intermediate nursing directors as well as nursing directors.
