Boris Johnson’s Corona news becomes a plea for the committee. The British government must hand over raw chat messages as well as notebooks and diaries of the then prime minister to the committee of inquiry. A court in London dismissed the lawsuit against the order.
In the dispute, Johnson had sided with commission chief Heather Hallett, who commanded it. This is seen as an attempt to harm his opponent within the party, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Sunak was Treasury Secretary under Johnson during the pandemic and may be named in the documents.
Johnson had already given his documents to the Cabinet Office in May. However, the authority refused to pass it on, arguing that the Commission was not competent. It also said the content of the documents was unrelated to the government’s handling of Covid-19. The Covid-19 Commission of Inquiry, on the other hand, argued that “this and future investigations” would become invalid if the government itself decided what content is relevant.
No judgments expected
The study examines whether the government in Great Britain was sufficiently prepared for the corona pandemic. About 227,000 people died from the disease in the UK, according to death certificates. The Commission can hear witnesses under oath and request documents, but cannot make any pronouncements.
The British Parliament recently accepted a report on Johnson’s “Partygate” lies, but the Conservatives rejected it (see video above). Johnson had fallen into disrepute for partying during the corona lockdowns.
