As Ukraine gains land in the southeast, the military leadership has admitted an attack on the Crimean bridge. The strategically important building went up in flames last year – and no one wanted that.
At the beginning of October 2022, war became tangible for the first time for many Russians. A violent explosion shook the Crimean Bridge. The building caught fire and partially collapsed. Videos posted on social media showed frightened Russian swimmers watching the trial from the beaches of the annexed Black Sea peninsula in Crimea. Little remains of the idyll today. Many beaches have been converted into fortifications.
Both the rail link and the highway of the strategically important bridge over the Kerch Strait were affected by the attack. But nobody wanted it to be. Now Kiev has confirmed the sabotage. Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maljar listed the achievements of Ukrainian troops on the 500th day of the war. Below: “273 days since the first attack on the Crimean Bridge to disrupt Russian logistics.”
Military intelligence pointed to involvement as early as May. The bridge is considered the longest in Europe and connects Crimea to mainland Russia. Their strategic importance is correspondingly large. Ukraine’s goal was to disrupt Russian supply lines, and it succeeded. However, the Crimean Bridge is now fully functional again.
Ukrainian advance in the southeast?
On the other hand, Ukraine is making progress in other regions, Volodymyr Zelenskyy assured. Especially in the southeast of the country. “We are making progress, we are not stuck,” Zelenskyj told the American TV channel ABC. Heavy fighting raged in two areas in the southeast, Maljar said on Telegram. “We are consolidating our achievements in these areas,” she wrote.
Russian troops defended Bakhmut, while Ukrainian troops registered “a certain advance” on the southern flank of the city. There are no position changes north of Bachmut. Heavy fighting continued west of the town and near Lyman further north.
Russia’s defense ministry said its troops pushed back Ukrainian advances near Bakhmut. The fierce fighting there would be complicated by the hilly topography.
According to the regional military administration, the Ukrainian region of Sumy in the northeast of the country near the border with Russia was again the target of Russian shellfire. Eleven explosions were recorded during the day on Sunday, the military administration announced on Telegram in the evening. However, no casualties or damage to civilian infrastructure have been reported so far.
Ukraine promises not to use cluster munitions in Russia
Meanwhile, the US has admitted war crimes with the White House’s decision to supply cluster munitions to Ukraine, the Russian embassy in Washington said. “We listened carefully to statements by White House national security spokesman John Kirby regarding the delivery of cluster munitions to Ukraine. He has effectively admitted that the United States committed war crimes in the conflict with Ukraine,” the embassy said late Sunday evening (local time) via Telegram.
Russia and Ukraine accuse each other of using cluster munitions. Ukraine promised last week that the munitions the US plans to ship to Kiev will not be used in Russia.
