A group of masked people staged an arson attack on a popular wholesale market in central Mexico on Monday, killing nine people. The reason for the murder is said to have been a business conflict.
Eight of the fatalities “died on the spot and another in a hospital,” authorities said. According to prosecutors, security camera footage showed armed suspects pouring an allegedly flammable liquid before fleeing the market. Shots would have been fired beforehand.
Toluca mayor Raymundo Martínez told Milenio newspaper that the fire was probably caused by disputes between sellers and owners of commercial properties in the market. Three of the dead were under the age of 18.
The attack took place in one of Mexico’s most dangerous cities
According to the authorities, the wholesale market in Toluca is the second largest market in Mexico with about 26,000 visitors every day. The city near Mexico City is the capital of the state of Mexico, the most populous in the country and also one of the most dangerous in terms of crime.
