Dramatic firefighting action in Pöchlarn, Melk district (Lower Austria): On Monday evening, a fire suddenly broke out in rooms on the first floor of an apartment building. Eight people had to be rescued from the burning house.
Dense smoke quickly spread up the stairwell and the building had to be evacuated. Armed with heavy respiratory protection, the emergency services made their way to the residents and managed to bring eight people – including a child – to safety in time. Two people suffered smoke inhalation and were taken to hospital. Three cats were also rescued unharmed by firefighters.
Arson suspected
Suspicion that the fire had been started quickly grew. A 59-year-old resident was targeted by detectives. The investigation was still ongoing on Tuesday. The evacuees were temporarily housed in alternative rooms.
