Banned internationally – US cluster munitions have already arrived in Ukraine

Date:

According to a senior Ukrainian army commander, the cluster munitions promised by the US have already arrived in Ukraine. “We just received them. We haven’t used it yet, but it can make a big difference (on the battlefield),” Commander Oleksandr Tarnavskyj said Thursday.

Tarnawskyj told US news channel CNN: “Even the enemy knows that we have an advantage by receiving this munitions.” However, Ukrainian troops would not use the munitions in densely populated areas, he assured.

Delivery announced last week
The US government announced last week that it would supply cluster munitions to Kiev. Cluster munitions are rockets and bombs that explode in the air above the target and disperse or release many small explosives – so-called bombs. The bullet thus covers a considerably larger area (see image below).

The ammunition type has been criticized because a significant percentage of explosives often do not detonate immediately, but remain in place as duds, endangering the population. They can kill or injure people long after they are dropped and therefore pose a particular danger to the civilian population.

Weapon is internationally prohibited
The weapon is internationally banned. 110 countries have signed an agreement against its use. Not included: USA, Russia and Ukraine. The UN Human Rights Office in Geneva condemned the US supply of cluster munitions to Ukraine: “Such munitions kill and maim people long after the end of a conflict,” a spokeswoman said last Friday. “Therefore, the operation must be stopped immediately.”
