The US has taken into custody a suspected Russian spy who was extradited from Estonia in a possible prisoner exchange for US prisoners in Russia. A spokesman for the US Justice Department said on Friday that Vadim Konoshchenok had “suspected advanced technologies and munitions developed in the United States for Russia” for its offensive war in Ukraine.
Konoschtschenok was arrested in Estonia late last year when he tried to cross the border into Russia with US-made semiconductors and sniper rifle ammunition. More than 450 kilograms of ammunition were seized, according to US officials.
The suspect faces up to 30 years in prison
According to US prosecutors, the man would have played an important role in a seven-member smuggling ring “led by Russian secret services” to acquire US electronics and other goods restricted by US export controls. If convicted, he faces up to 30 years in prison for conspiracy, export control violations, smuggling and money laundering.
US reporter also in custody in Russia on espionage charges
His extradition comes as Washington attempts to negotiate the return of US citizens held by Moscow. These include ex-US soldier Paul Whelan, who has been jailed in Russia on espionage charges, and Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich. Moscow also accuses him of espionage, which Gershkovich categorically denies, as does the US government.
US President Joe Biden said during a visit to Finland on Thursday that he will do everything he can “to free Americans held illegally in Russia or elsewhere.” This process is “ongoing”.
