Encounters are increasing – snake makes it easy under the kitchen table

Date:

The reptiles are increasingly frightening householders – most recently there were encounters in Pernitz and Biedermannsdorf (Lower Austria). The head of the Vösendorf animal shelter knows what to do in case of an emergency.

An uninvited dinner recently caused a lot of inconvenience among the residents of Pernitz. A snake had made itself comfortable under the kitchen table and was waiting for its “snack”. Six firefighters went to the Mathildensteig. The first thing to do was clarify whether the reptile is a non-toxic specimen. Since this could not be clarified, the animal was carefully placed in a bucket with a poker and released into the forest. A completely non-venomous grass snake, on the other hand, called the Florianis in Biedermannsdorf to the scene. The three meter long specimen was caught in the garden and then released into the wild.

Why snakes get close to people
But why do you encounter snakes in densely populated areas? The “Krone” spoke to the head of the animal shelter in Vösendorf, Stephan Scheidl: He explains: “Some snakes come close to people because of food sources such as compost heaps. But also because of the warmth that a house provides.” Unfortunately, the reptile trade is booming: “Especially exotic animals are considered ‘cool’ pets. But keeping them is expensive because of the high energy costs. They are often simply released.” Of course, Scheidl knows what to do when meeting: “It is important to keep an eye on the animal to know where it is going.” Inside it is important to mark possible hiding places.
