An actor has been arrested in Iran after he criticized the violent enforcement of the headscarf requirement. Mohamad Sadeghi was arrested by the fire service in his hometown in the capital Tehran, the Tasnim news agency reported on Sunday.
Videos circulated on Twitter showing officers breaking into the man’s home during a live recording of Sadeghi for social media. The actor previously released a video in which he criticized the state’s crackdown on women who do not follow a strict dress code.
Morality guards should be used again
Only on Sunday did the Iranian authorities announce the return of the moral guards, who had disappeared after the mass protests in major cities last year, to enforce the headscarf. Patrols across the country are on foot and in cars to take action against offenders. A draft law also provides for tougher penalties for breaking the dress code.
The reason for the mass protests in the autumn of 2022 against the political and religious leadership of the country was the death of the Iranian Kurd Jina Mahsa Amini. The young woman died in police custody after being arrested for violating Islamic dress codes.
