Ukrainian forces apparently fired long-range missiles at a Russian air base in Crimea, and bright flashes of explosions lit up the sky over the occupied peninsula at night. However, the exact background has remained unclear until now. Now the Atesch partisan group has reported a “successful” attack.
The attack on the military base in Dzhankoy destroyed a Russian S-400 anti-aircraft system, including a radar system and several launch platforms, the group, which consists of Crimean Tatars, Ukrainians and Russians, told Telegram. They gave exact coordinates where the impact occurred. Officers at this location had previously recorded “long chests being taken to protected caponiers” (solid brick passageways in forts), it was said. A series of massive explosions had previously been reported from there.
“Missiles stored next to launch pads”
“The occupiers were so confident in their latest air defense system that they stored missiles right next to the launch pads,” Atesch continued. There was also a significant hit on a command post, the group said, citing one of its air defense unit operatives.
Several Russian helicopters at the airfield were apparently destroyed:
To protect their agents, they do not provide any further information. The guerrilla group said the details had been passed on to Ukrainian forces.
Earlier, the Ukrainian side said two US ATACMS missiles hit the airport on the Black Sea Peninsula. Several helicopters were destroyed and Russian soldiers were killed or injured. There was no independent evidence for that.
Hypersonic missiles destroyed?
In any case, the Atesch group’s reference to destroyed missiles fuels rumors that stored hypersonic missiles of the “Zircon” type, which were supposedly intended to be fired at Kiev, were also destroyed.
In Russia itself, Ukrainian military intelligence attacked several targets with drones on Wednesday. One of these was an aircraft factory in Kazan, according to the RBK-Ukraina news agency. The Tupolev 22M and 160M strategic bombers are built and repaired at the plant, which is located almost 1,000 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. Several explosions were reportedly heard near the factory site. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, an aircraft-like drone was intercepted over the Republic of Tatarstan.
Russia: Drone attacks repulsed
According to Ukrainian media reports, another attack targeted a radar station near the town of Kovylkino in Mordovia, more than 600 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, this drone attack was also repulsed.
Ukraine has been defending a Russian invasion with Western support for more than two years. Ukrainian long-range unmanned aerial vehicles are regularly deployed against targets deep in the Russian hinterland.
