Air Defense & Co – The NATO alliance wants to better support Ukraine

Date:

In response to Ukraine’s urgent requests, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg is now convening a meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council this Friday. The war-torn country should receive significantly more air defense systems and artillery shells.

According to plans, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and defense ministers of member states will be represented at the meeting. Initially it was not known whether this would be organized via video conference or as a physical meeting. Zelensky had previously expressed his desire to convene the NATO-Ukraine Council for better defense of his country’s airspace, based on Israel’s model. Ukraine will apply for the supply of anti-aircraft systems and missiles, he said in a video message distributed in Kiev on Tuesday evening.

The people of Ukraine also have the right to protection from terror, Zelensky argued, referring to Israel’s air defenses, which successfully repelled Iranian airstrikes last weekend. Ukraine repeatedly complains of serious damage after heavy shelling by Russia, including by Iranian-made drones.

Zelensky: “People must be protected equally everywhere”
Ukraine is exposed to the same missile and drone attacks, and human lives must be equally protected everywhere, Zelensky said. Ukraine continues to struggle to get real help from its allies.

Stoltenberg made it clear on Wednesday that he considers resolute support for Ukraine in the current situation more important than achieving the alliance’s objectives for the supply of weapons and ammunition. If allies are currently faced with the choice of meeting NATO’s capability goals or providing more aid to Ukraine, the message is clear, Stoltenberg explains. This is to send more aid to Ukraine.

NATO-Ukraine-Rat
The NATO-Ukraine Council met for the first time last year during the NATO summit in Lithuania at the level of heads of state and government. The new committee was established for exchanges in crisis situations. It should also allow for closer cooperation until the conditions for Ukraine’s accession to NATO are met. These include an end to Russia’s war of aggression and reforms in Ukraine.
