More demand, fewer donations: Caritas hopes for new deliveries for the social markets.
Exploding food prices and record inflation have consequences: demand has been rising for weeks on the social markets of Caritas St. Pölten. The average weekly household purchase has become 19 percent more expensive compared to 2022. This increases customer frequency in the “Soma” branches – in total, customer traffic has tripled since 2021!
More donations needed
As a result, more and more food donations are needed to meet the demand in Krems, Schrems, Gföhl, Gars, Zwettl and Waidhofen an der Thaya. “Our customers in the Waldviertel are already queuing up to two hours before the store opens to get the groceries they need,” says Martina Neubauer, head of Soma-Schrems.
But lately the donations from the supermarkets and bakeries have decreased. That is why the Caritas of the Diocese of St. Pölten asks for food donations. Fruit, vegetables and non-perishable foods such as pasta, rice, sugar or flour are urgently needed and can be delivered during office hours.
