A Moldovan opposition leader has been found dead in the breakaway region of Transnistria. According to the regional interior ministry, 47-year-old Oleg Horyan was found dead at his home in Tiraspol. Nothing has been disclosed about the cause of death.
However, according to the authorities, there are “signs of a violent death”. As leader of the Transnistrian Communist Party, Horjan had sought closer ties with Russia. Horjan’s wife found the body “in one of the rooms, next to an open safe. The safe is empty,” the ministry said. Investigators suspected robbery as a possible motive.
Frozen conflict on territory of EU accession candidate
Like Ukraine, Moldova is a candidate for EU accession. In the small, poverty-stricken country, Russia has traditionally also had a strong influence, particularly in the breakaway region of Transnistria, where Russian soldiers have been stationed since the 1990s. The frozen conflict over the predominantly Russian-speaking region of Transnistria is a recurring political problem in the country.
During Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, international observers repeatedly warned that Moscow could use the unrest in the region as an excuse to escalate the situation. Moldova’s pro-European president, Maia Sandu, has repeatedly complained about interference and planned coup attempts by Russian secret services in her country.
