US-China talks – John Kerry: Climate change “threat to humanity”

Date:

During a visit to China, US climate chief John Kerry described climate change as a “threat to all of humanity”. “Climate, as you know, is a global problem, not a bilateral one. It is a threat to all of humanity,” Kerry told China’s top diplomat Wang Yi in Beijing on Tuesday. This requires “global leadership”. The world “hopes for this and needs this”.

“Our hope is that this can now be the beginning of a new definition of collaboration and the ability to resolve the differences between us,” said Kerry. “We both know there are real differences.”

However, both also know from experience “that if we work at it, we can find ways to solve these challenges”. Addressing Chinese Premier Li Qiang, Kerry warned that the elevated temperature situation could get worse this summer. In the Chinese region of Xinjiang, 52.3 degrees Celsius was measured on Sunday.

Wang stressed the need for a “healthy, stable and lasting relationship between China and the US”. It needs the joint support of the people of both countries, Wang said. He referred to Kerry as “my old friend”.

China trip until Wednesday
Kerry’s trip to China began on Sunday and is expected to last through Wednesday. According to Chinese state media, Kerry met with his Chinese colleague Xie Zhenhua for four hours on Monday.

Climate policy: Relations between the US and China are tense
Last year, China briefly suspended talks with the US on climate policy after then-Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan. However, Kerry’s relations with his Chinese interlocutors are considered relatively good.

The Biden administration sees climate policy as a policy area in which Washington and Beijing can work together. On the one hand, China and the US are responsible for the largest CO2 emissions in the world, but they also make the largest investments in renewable energy.
