“Persistent Threat” – US destroyers and fighter jets deployed to the Middle East

Date:

The US military is increasing its presence in the Middle East. A destroyer and F-35 and F-16 fighter jets would be sent to the region, the US Department of Defense said Monday (local time).

A Pentagon spokeswoman referred to the “ongoing threat” after an Iranian naval vessel attempted to take control of two merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman. The U.S. Department of Defense “in coordination with our partners and allies, is increasing our presence and ability to monitor the strait and surrounding waters,” the Pentagon said.

The ministry called on Iran to immediately stop “destabilizing actions that threaten free trade through this strategic waterway”.

The Gulf of Oman lies between Oman and Iran. It is an important sea route for the transportation of oil.
