House roofs covered – wild storms cause enormous damage in Tyrol

Date:

With heavy thunderstorms, including hail showers, a heavy thunderstorm is currently moving through Tyrol. Dozens of fallen trees and covered roofs were the result. The Austrian Severe Weather Center reported the highest level (violet level) over large parts of Tyrol, the remaining parts were red or orange. Train connections were also interrupted. There was also a brief alarm for civil defense.

Heavy storm warnings were not only issued for Carinthia, heavy storms also passed through Tyrol on Tuesday afternoon. A hotspot should be the rear Zillertal. In Zell, for example, football goals were ripped out and thrown on the roof of the local tourism school.

In an outdoor pool, the storm may have taken swimmers by surprise. Due to several fallen trees torn from the ground by the wind gusts, parents with their children and other guests are currently in the cloakrooms and are not allowed to go outside. They must be evacuated. In Hainzenberg, a few kilometers away, there is currently no progress. Numerous fallen trees block the roads.

Civil defense alert, eyewitnesses report
The municipality of Silz was hit hard. A civil protection warning was even briefly issued there. In a woman’s yard, it uprooted a tree that had fallen on her house. “I really just wanted to put the umbrella in, but then I just went into the house. It was like a tornado.” She was “like in shock”. Karl Föger (69) and his wife Angelika are standing in front of their house, the roof of which has been covered. He also speaks of a tornado: “The wind was gone in 20 seconds. I stood by our first floor window and watched the roof of the house across the street fly off. Then it covered ours. Everything on the second floor is in ruins, the TV, the piano. It also contains water. Three weeks ago I commissioned the new photovoltaic system, it is in ruins.”

Storm winds of more than 100 km/h
About 500 firefighting operations were counted within hours, according to the APA. This was mainly due to fallen trees and power outages. According to the storm center, wind peaks of up to 161 km/h were reached in Innsbruck. However, so far no major damage has been done in the capital. In the area it is different: for example on the Inntalautobahn near Telfs, where fallen trees also blocked the main routes.

East Tyrol also reached
More than an hour and a half after the first storm reports in Tyrol, the wind gusts also reached large parts of East Tyrol. In the Lienzertal, for example, heavy hailstorms thundered down for a short time, together with enormous rain and wind – see video above.

Hundreds of power outages
As Tinetz reports, there have been a number of supply interruptions since the start of the storm front at 2:40 p.m. Shortly after 5 p.m., 272 transformer stations were not supplied, 39 communities were affected. The teams are working to resolve the disruptions and work is being done on supplies, the website said.

Train connections are also affected
As the ÖBB reports, several parts of the western route are also affected by the consequences of storm damage. For example, the route between Landeck and Zams or between Innsbruck and Landeck.
