What happens to a person who just leaves helpless kittens in the woods and leaves them to fend for themselves? That is exactly what happened recently in a forest area in Upper Austria. A total of eight tiny baby kittens were placed in a box and left alone.
Just in time, a forest worker accidentally discovered the small box containing the eight abandoned kittens in a forest in the municipality of Pöndorf. Fortunately, three were still alive. However, five other kittens had already died and were lying close together next to the living kittens.
Baby kittens totally hypothermic
Without thinking twice, the finder immediately took the three hypothermic babies to the animal shelter Pfotenhilfe in Lochen. There, boss Johanna Stadler immediately personally took care of the little ones, gave them a warm bottle and gave them the names “Stella”, “Bärli” and “Fritzi”.
“Snack for Hay”
“The trio was probably born on a farm because they smelled of hay, silage and a little bit of cow dung. Unfortunately, it seems that – after the mother was unlawfully not castrated – the unwanted offspring was left so deep in the forest that it would not be found again’, Stadler is appalled at such cold-bloodedness.
The three kittens are now doing well and are being lovingly cared for and played with by the zookeeper. According to Pfotenhilfe Austria, such cases occur almost every day, where kittens are simply abandoned to starve.
Mandatory sterilization in Austria
“For almost 20 years now, all cats with access to the outside world in Austria have had to be neutered. Farm cats are no exception. But without checks, the situation will not improve!”
