For the first time since the start of the war in Ukraine, a marathon took place in the capital Kiev on Sunday. Under the motto ‘Kiev Marathon of Invincibility’, thousands of runners did their best to reach the finish.
“You should try to make your life easier in every possible way,” Vlada, a 32-year-old participant, told AFP. “If sport helps you deal with fears or other difficult life situations, then of course you should do it.” Last year the event, in which 17,000 athletes took part in 2019, had to be canceled due to the fighting in Ukraine. But this year they sent a message to the world: life goes on and you don’t give up.
“Incredible willpower”
According to organizers, half of the proceeds from the event will go towards the purchase of equipment for the Ukrainian army. Numerous veterans and war invalids also ran. They all “showed incredible willpower,” organizers wrote on their Facebook page. They also thanked “our defenders” who made the run possible.
