The city of Vienna accidentally asked numerous customers to repay the municipal energy bonus. The reason for this request is said to have been that some customers had not timely submitted the required statement with full proof of income. The office of social councilor Peter Hacker (SPÖ) confirmed the incident. It was an IT error.
About 3,800 Viennese people found the bad news in their mailboxes. What was particularly striking was that the date on which the proof of income should have been sent was in the future.
The hacker agency explained that this “oops” happened because text modules were incorrectly linked. According to profil.at, instead of a request to submit the documents later, those affected received a letter asking them to pay back.
Sorry for the mistake at City Hall. The recipients, it was emphasized, need not take any further steps. Above all, the money may not be refunded under any circumstances.
