A Salzburger (58) living in Vienna is on trial on Wednesday for forcing his mother to exercise – the result was falls and charges of torturing defenseless people. In front of the judge, he shows remorse: “I overpowered her with it”.
The prosecution alleges that the man tortured his mother seven times on different days between spring 2021 and May 2023: he allegedly forced the woman, who was over 80 years old, to do strenuous exercises, which in some cases led to her falling and injuries. In one case, he would have beaten her lightly, according to the indictment.
Forced to climb
Was it exaggerated? Probably good will. The 58-year-old, who lives in Vienna, repeatedly drove to his mother’s house to help her at the request of other relatives. “He wanted to mobilize the mother. He meant well and not maliciously,” the defender emphasized. “I feel responsible. I did not want to admit that the mother was no longer mobile and was always in bed,” the suspect said in the Salzburg court on Wednesday.
Doctors had also advised the woman to exercise more. “I just wanted her to go again and I overwhelmed her with that,” the visibly shaken local admitted. He did not fight, but the woman, who has since passed away, simply fell down unhappy. “They had good intentions, but went too far,” said jury member Markus Hanl. Because: the exercises such as climbing stairs were just too much.
Since the public prosecutor also had no objection to a distraction, Hanl imposed a fine of 800 euros. After payment of this within two weeks, the criminal case will be stopped.
