But no burning – protester in Sweden trampled Koran

Date:

At a demonstration in Sweden on Thursday, Iraqi exile Salwan Momika stepped on the Quran but did not burn it as announced. The original plan led to an attack on the Swedish embassy in Baghdad on Thursday night. Tensions between Sweden and Iraq are currently on the rise.

For example, the Iraqi government has expelled the Swedish ambassador from the country. This could be a sign of the severing of diplomatic relations between the two countries, which Iraq had already threatened if another copy of the Quran was burned.

The Iraqi Salwan Momika, who fled to Sweden, renounced that a little later. He originally planned to burn holy scriptures of Muslims in front of the Iraqi embassy in Stockholm. Instead, he stepped on the holy book several times. At the end of June, during one of his demonstrations in front of the mosque in Stockholm, a copy of the Koran was actually set on fire. This is considered blasphemous in Islam as the original Arabic text is taken to be the literal speech of Allah. There are penalties for this in many Islamic countries.

Only two people at demo?
Swedish police had approved a request for a public gathering in which one person wanted to burn a Koran and an Iraqi flag. Accordingly, only two people are allowed to participate in the demonstration in Stockholm on Thursday. The announcement alone provoked a storm to attack the Swedish embassy in the Iraqi capital Baghdad. As reported, protesters stormed the building and set it on fire.
