Leading carbon dioxide emissions from industry directly into depleted natural gas rock strata instead of into the atmosphere: the technology is mature, resources are available underground in the Weinviertel and the Vienna Basin. What opportunities arise and why there is also great potential for the “storage” of wind and solar energy.
Carbon Caputre Storage (CCS) is considered a forward-looking technology that primarily prevents industrial carbon dioxide emissions from entering the atmosphere. Instead, the greenhouse gas is pumped into underground, depleted natural gas fields. OMV has been using this technology successfully for years – especially in Norway: the Ministry only issued a new permit at the end of March – by 2025 further deposits must be investigated with 3D seismics.
