The mountain tour of a group of 14 on Thursday on the Speikkogel in Styria ended in tragedy: a 72-year-old man from Graz fell down a steep slope and died.
According to the police, the hiking group marched from the Speikkogel down to the Peterer saddle and back to the reservoir via the marked hiking trail. At 12:00 disaster struck: the 73-year-old from Graz, who was about ten meters behind the group, fell about 50 meters down a steep slope.
Two other climbers in the group witnessed the accident. They immediately initiated the rescue chain and provided first aid. However, the emergency doctor of the rescue helicopter Christophorus 12 was only able to determine the death of the 73-year-old. The body was recovered by the police helicopter “Libelle Steiermark”. The mountain rescue services Voitsberg and Köflach were also deployed.
