The trial against former US President Donald Trump in the so-called document affair will begin in May 2024. This was reported by the AFP news agency on Friday, referring to the responsible federal judge.
Federal Judge Aileen Cannon set May 24, 2024 as the date for the trial to begin in Miami, Florida. According to the judge, the process of allegedly illegally storing secret files should actually start in August, but Trump’s lawyers had asked for an extension.
Secret documents taken
Trump took at least 700 pages of classified documents with him after leaving the White House, according to the US National Archives. According to a letter to a Trump lawyer that the archive released in late August last year, some of them are classified as top secret. These are documents stored at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida and handed over in January 2022.
The files, some classified as “top secret”, were discovered last August during a raid in Mar-a-Lago (pictured below). According to CNN, there are eleven sets of classified documents, including some marked “top secret/SCI” – one of the highest levels of classification. It was not disclosed what the documents were about.
It is being investigated on the basis of three federal crimes: violating the espionage law, obstructing justice and criminally using government data.
