According to official information, an unknown person killed a United Nations employee in Yemen. He was allegedly shot dead by a gunman on a motorcycle on Friday while sitting in a restaurant in the southwestern city of Turbah.
Local police told the German news agency that the victim (pictured below) is the regional head of the World Food Program (WFP) in Tais province. He was a Jordanian citizen.
According to the police, the perpetrator escaped unharmed. The attack came shortly after WFP’s decision to open a regional office in Tais. The state news agency Saba has confirmed the attack. Further details are not known.
The UN has so far been silent
The United Nations has not yet commented on the matter. It is the second fatal attack on an employee of an international organization in Tais province. In 2018, a Lebanese who worked for the International Committee of the Red Cross was shot there.
humanitarian catastrophe
Yemen has been raging since late 2014 in a devastating conflict between the government, the Houthi rebels and their allies. Saudi Arabia is fighting in Yemen against the Iranian-backed Houthis, who overran the country in 2014 and control large parts of the north.
The United Nations considers the conflict in Yemen a humanitarian catastrophe that has pushed the country to the brink of famine.
Since the diplomatic rapprochement between Saudi Arabia and Iran – the main supporter of the Yemeni rebels – the situation in the country has calmed down. Between April and October 2022, an official ceasefire was finally negotiated with the help of the United Nations.
