After hours of searching for a supposedly escaped lioness, the false alarm in southern Berlin was lifted. The mayor is relieved in conversation with the “Krone” and defends the extensive search measures. A local inspection at the event site.
Actually, the south of the German federal capital Berlin is an idyllic place. Lots of greenery and water, one beautiful single-family home follows the other. A place where the world still seems to be in order. Were it not for a so-called runaway lioness. An absolute state of emergency reigned here for almost 30 hours.
At the local inspection “Krone” in the municipality of Kleinmachnow with a population of 20,000, we get a sick feeling when we walk through the deserted forest. The population probably took the authorities’ warning to restrict outdoor activities seriously. Planned open-air events were canceled as a precaution or moved indoors, such as the open-air cinema.
“It takes a load off my mind”
But a short time later, the city council gave it all-clear on Friday afternoon. “It’s a relief to me,” Mayor Michael Grubert said with relief in an interview with “Krone.” It was not funny, after all, the children should be forbidden to play outside. People have been urged not to leave their homes and also to keep pets inside. Would he act like that again? “Yeah, but next time I’d ask questions sooner.”
Retired Ingeborg B. (81) lives right next to the forest where the alleged lioness was spotted. “It was a little scary last night. Well, I wouldn’t have gone into the woods alone.” She is glad that instead of the exotic predator, there is most likely only a wild boar roaming the area Wild boars are very common here, almost every night they destroy their garden and overturn garbage cans.
“We live here with the wild boars”
Sabine U. (64) and her dog Emmi (13) can smile again. When she saw the video of the lion sighting, she would have known immediately that it was a wild boar. “We live here with the wild boars. They are always there when we go out again in the evening.” She now hopes that more people will soon be back in the woods.
The lioness is also said to have been sighted on the Richard-Strauß-Weg. But the only lion you really see here is on a billboard. It reads “Tanzania Safari Bug – Your Travel Specialist for East Africa Travel”.
