In the summer, more energy is generated in Austria than we consume. Due to a lack of transport capacity, they cannot be sold abroad either. On the contrary: removing the surplus from the grid causes high costs and jeopardizes grid stability.
It is actually very gratifying: the expansion of renewable energy in Austria is progressing, and photovoltaic energy in particular is booming. Currently, 150 megawatts are being installed on roofs of homes, mostly by private individuals. The result is that as much power is added each year as if several Danube power plants were newly connected to the grid.
This means that in the summer months in Austria the entire demand for water, wind and solar can be covered and we (unlike the winter or last year) do not need gas-fired power plants or electricity imports (see graph).
