Poll started – parliamentary elections in Spain – shift to the right possible

Date:

Spain will elect a new parliament on Sunday. The polls indicate that the left-wing minority government of Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is on the verge of defeat. The conservative People’s Party, with some 47 million inhabitants, will probably be the strongest force in the country, but will not win an absolute majority. Your top candidate, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, would then depend on the far-right populist Vox party to form a government.

Originally, elections were not to be held in Spain until the end of this year. After a debacle for the socialists and left parties in regional and local elections on May 28, Sánchez brought the date forward. The left camp still hopes for a turnaround.

Sánchez’s previous government partner, the left-wing party Unidas Podemos, was absorbed into the electoral alliance “Sumar”. A total of 15 parties from the alternative left spectrum are represented. According to experts, the background of the tactical merger is that the Spanish electoral system gives proportionally more weight to larger parties.

Polling stations close at 20:00 CEST (21:00 CEST in the Canary Islands).
