Every driver’s nightmare came true on Sunday afternoon near Frohnleiten in Styria: three vehicles collided in the Schartnerkogel tunnel, one crashed into the tunnel tube. This meant a large-scale action for the fire brigades in the area.
Around 12:30 a 51-year-old woman from Graz drove her car into the Schartnerkogel tunnel. At the level of the south portal, she ended up on the oncoming lane for unknown reasons and hit an oncoming car, which was being driven by a 51-year-old from the Weiz district.
The driver lost control, the vehicle skidded and collided with the tunnel wall. Another oncoming car, driven by a 56-year-old man from Graz, then crashed into the accident vehicle. According to the police, all three involved and the 51-year-old’s passenger, an 18-year-old from Weiz district, suffered injuries of undetermined extent and were taken to the Graz regional hospital. Significant damage was caused to all vehicles.
62 firefighters arrived on the scene
The volunteer fire brigades in Deutschfeistritz, Friesach-Wörth, Übelbach-Markt and Gratkorn-Markt were deployed with a total of 62 people and eleven vehicles. The tunnel was closed for nearly two hours. There was a long traffic jam, and that in the middle of tourist traffic.
