After the massive attack on Israel by the mullahs’ regime, Britain and the US decided to impose new sanctions on Iran. These have consequences for the Iranian drone program, the Ministry of Defense, the Revolutionary Guards and the metal and automotive industries.
With the new measures, “we are holding Iran accountable,” Biden said. According to the US Treasury Department, the United States’ punitive measures include those involved in the production of Shahed drones.
These drones were used this weekend in the first direct attack from Iranian territory on Israel. In addition, the new sanctions are reportedly impacting Iran’s metal and automotive industries.
The EU is also planning new sanctions
The conclusions of an EU summit in Brussels on Wednesday evening on the Middle East read: “The European Union will take further restrictive measures against Iran, especially regarding drones and missiles.” EU chief diplomat Josep Borrell was already working on new sanctions announced on Tuesday evening after a video conference of the foreign ministers of the EU countries.
G7 also has drones in its sights
During Thursday’s meeting of the foreign ministers of the main democratic economic countries (G7 group) in Capri, the Spaniard said that a “system banning the export of components for the production of drones and missiles to Iran” already existed. But this needs to be rechecked to “enlarge it and make it more efficient.”
Since July last year, restrictions have been in place for all European companies supplying components for the production of these weapons to Iran, he explained. “We will strengthen it, but it already exists,” said Borrell, who participated as an observer. “The most important thing is often the implementation of a decision.”
Israel sees its back being strengthened
Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz welcomed the EU’s intention to impose further sanctions on the Islamic Republic following Iran’s major attack on Israel. “This is an important step in pulling the teeth out of the snake,” Katz wrote on X on Thursday. He thanked “all our friends for the support and help.” Katz wrote: “Iran must be stopped now before it is too late.”
Call for de-escalation
The EU also called on Israel and Iran to refrain from further attacks on each other. Iran and its allies deployed more than 500 missiles, cruise missiles and drones against Israel over the weekend, but they were largely intercepted. There are major concerns that the conflict could spread further if Israel were to launch a harsh counter-attack.
The Iranian attack was caused by a suspected Israeli attack on the Iranian embassy in the Syrian capital Damascus. Early this month, two generals of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards were killed.
