Explosion in Vienna – attempted murder: neighbor doused with gasoline

On Thursday morning, a 49-year-old poured gasoline on his neighbor in an apartment on Hietzinger Auhofstrasse in Vienna. After she managed to escape in time, he barricaded himself in the apartment, doused himself with gasoline and set himself on fire. Shortly afterwards a violent explosion occurred.

His neighbor had previously reported him for noise pollution. According to police, he then attacked her with a wooden object in the stairwell, injured her and then doused her with gasoline. Shortly afterwards he also tried to set the victim on fire.

Suspect set himself on fire
An observant passerby saw the attack and immediately intervened. As a result, the victim was able to escape with minor injuries. The 49-year-old then barricaded himself in the ground floor apartment. When the emergency services, including WEGA officials, smelled a strong odor of gasoline, they asked him to open the door. But without success. Shortly afterwards, a violent explosion occurred in the apartment.

Taser was used
WEGA officers then broke down the apartment door and were able to extricate the suspect from the apartment with a knife, suffering suspected self-inflicted wounds to the head and neck area and a burning lower body. The man was arrested after using a Taser.

Apartment fire quickly extinguished
According to police, the man doused himself with gasoline and set himself on fire. The Vienna Fire Department was able to extinguish the existing fire in the apartment. The man and woman were then taken to hospitals.
