The Euskadi Food Campus is a joint initiative of the Basque government, the provincial council of Bizkaia and the municipalities of Ortuella and Bilbao, the latter as majority shareholder of Mercabilbao together with Mercasa, and the network of technology parks of the Basque Country.

After just over half a century since the opening of the Mercabilbao facilities in the Basauri district in Artunduagaof the Network of Technology Parks have pointed out that the evolution of its activity, as well as the impossibility of growth in its current facilities, advise its transfer.

On the other hand, they pointed out that the transfer of Mercabilbao to this new food campus, whose new extension will multiply that of the distribution center currently located in Basauri, according to its needs, converts its current 13 hectares of land into a “new land of opportunity “for Basauri, in which the Basque government, the provincial council of Bizkaia and the municipal council of Basauri “are already concentrating their efforts to continue to generate economic activity and employment in the area”.

Mercabilbao currently has a hundred companies in its branches that directly 1200 people with an annual turnover of 260,000 tons of perishable products in the majority, intended for daily supply to the local trade and restaurant.

For its part, the Basauri City Council has indicated in a press release that the transfer of Mercalibao will take place within a period of four or five years, as the expansion of the land that Mercabilbao currently occupies “is not sufficient to This is your new project, which four times more surface area”.

“We are not talking about closing a company, we are talking about moving to a nearby municipality in the territory of Bizkaia which is 20 minutes away. There is no destruction of employment,” the Consistory noted.

50 hectares

According to the initial project, the Euskadi Food Campus will cover an area of ​​almost 50 hectares, in an environment conducive to any future expansion and in which quality road, rail and maritime connections can be guaranteed, with the aim of promoting the activity of the park and promote its position as a benchmark food campus.

An investment of 60 million euros is estimated for the purchase of the land and for the urbanization works. Currently, the Network of Technology Parks owns 135,000 m2, with the rest up to 500,000 m2 under construction. The new campus, when fully developed, will 2000 jobs directly and has a turnover of 750 million euros.

The Food Campus will provide a centralized platform for quality control of raw materials, production processes and finished products, a semi-industrial pilot plant for the development of concept testing prior to production and market launch, a platform for occupational risk prevention and minimization services and the optimization of industrial processes through advanced digitization. and automation services.

The Mayor of Bilbao, Juan Mari Aburtohas stated that the move represents an “excellent opportunity for growth and development for Mercabilbao, as it needs to expand after 50 years of activity in its current premises in Basauri, something that has not been possible until now due to lack of space”.
