The Salzburg regional court on Monday sentenced a 51-year-old Nigerian to three and a half years in prison for a perfidious form of modern slavery. He is said to have lured two young compatriots to Salzburg and forced them into prostitution.
The suspect was accused of having promised the women legal work in Austria in order to bring them here. Instead, according to the indictment, he locked her in his apartment and made her work as a prostitute from August 2016 to 2019. He would have extorted at least 15,000 euros from them. Another Nigerian is said to have helped him. He was given six months’ probation. According to the prosecution, the women were subjected to a “juju ritual,” black magic from traditional West African beliefs, by an accomplice named “Madam Joy.”
oath as leverage
The victims therefore had to swear that they would have to pay back the full travel costs of the alleged amount of 40,000 euros and that their families would be cursed if they reported this to the police. The perpetrators are said to have sealed this oath by cutting off the women’s pubic hair and nails and keeping them in an urn. The defendants denied the allegations. Not legally binding.
