Ukrainian detectives on Monday arrested the dismissed head of a military replacement agency in the Odessa district on charges of corruption. The man allegedly enriched himself illegally by exempting men from military service in exchange for bribes. The military official is said to have bought property worth millions in Spain during the war. He faces up to ten years in prison if convicted.
In June, Commander-in-Chief Valeriy Zalushnyi was ordered to immediately fire the man “whom the whole country is talking about,” according to a statement from the Presidential Office.
Real estate for 3 million euros
Internet newspaper Ukrayinska Pravda had previously reported that members of the military official’s family had bought properties on the Spanish coast worth more than three million euros and luxury cars.
The acquisitions would have been made by the end of 2022 – almost a year after the outbreak of war. The case had already been made public in April by a former member of parliament. However, Kiev only reacted after the media report.
Suspect wanted to escape from detectives
Investigators said the suspect tried to evade investigators by changing phone numbers and license plates. “He was actively sought for two days and finally, as a result of extensive operational investigations in Kiev, he was discovered and arrested,” the authority said.
