“Prices too high” – Afghanistan: Taliban ban beauty salons

Date:

In Afghanistan, the closure of beauty parlors imposed by the militant Islamist Taliban has come into effect. A beautician in Kabul reported on Tuesday that her shops were closed and she was told to go home. Also in the capital, another woman reported checks by Islamists. The Taliban announced the new arrangement by decree earlier this month.

The reason the rulers gave for closing the beauty salons was that their high prices would cause economic problems for families at weddings. In addition, the operators would not have adhered to the existing requirements. Last week dozens of women in Kabul protested against the decision. The demonstration was violently broken up and, according to participants, some women were taken away.

Women have few jobs anymore
With the closure of beauty salons, Afghan women are losing one of the few remaining sources of income. Heather Barr of the human rights organization Human Rights Watch stressed that it is not just about getting their hair and nails done, but that some 60,000 women are losing their jobs.

A beautician told dpa that she opened her beauty salon shortly after the Taliban came to power and that she was happy with her business but was now forced to close.

When the Taliban came to power in August 2021, the Islamic Taliban promised to rule more moderately. Recently their rule has become more authoritarian and dogmatic. Women have now been driven out of most professions. They are also no longer allowed to go to universities and colleges.
