Demonstrators from the Danish patriot group set fire to a Quran in front of the Egyptian embassy in Copenhagen on Tuesday. It was the third such incident in Denmark in a week: On Monday, the group burned the Muslims’ holy book in front of the Iraqi embassy. A similar incident occurred last week. In Sweden, the holy scriptures of the Muslims have been set on fire twice in the past month.
Egypt summoned the manager of the Swedish embassy on Tuesday. Iraq asked EU countries on Monday to “quickly reconsider their so-called freedom of expression and the right to demonstrate”.
Other predominantly Muslim countries such as Turkey and Iran have also condemned the burning of the Koran. In Iraq, several thousand people protested against it on Saturday. In Baghdad, a mob stormed the Swedish embassy last week and set it on fire. Both European countries have condemned the actions, but refer to the protection of freedom of expression.
