France’s president begins his second five-year term in solemn ceremony
French President Emmanuel Macron’s second term will be a five-year campaign. This was promised by the French head of state in the inauguration speech he delivered on Saturday in the banquet hall of the Elysée Palace, after he was re-elected president on April 24 with 58.5% of the vote.
Unlike other countries that, in times of crisis, have opted for “withdrawal”, “nationalist temptation” or “nostalgia for the past”, in the last elections the French people chose “a clear and explicit project for the future, a republican and European project, a project of independence in a destabilized world, a project of scientific, social and environmental progress” and “turning back easy demagoguery”, Macron assured 450 guests.
Macron’s first term was not an easy one. It has been marked by a succession of crises: from the violent ‘yellow vest’ protests to the war in Ukraine, through the Covid-19 pandemic, the demonstrations against the pension reform and terrorist attacks.
Macron, who view his opponents as too arrogant and authoritarian, promised that this second term, which officially starts on May 14 at midnight, will be different. It won’t be five years of the same. He believes that the French people “have not renewed the mandate that is expiring”, but that “a new people, unlike five years ago” has entrusted “a new president with a new mandate”. This new five-year period will be marked by “decisive action by France and Europe”, the president promised.
The inauguration ceremony was more austere than five years ago, as were its two predecessors who were re-elected, François Mitterrand and Jacques Chirac.
Macron is aware that despite being re-elected as president, the country is very divided and many of those who voted for him have not convinced this because they considered him the best candidate, but because of the extreme right of the Marines. Le Pen came to power.
