When it comes to youth work, there is often a reluctance to initiate initiatives. It is precisely the costs for street workers that deter communities. The investment would be well worth it.
Rene Wagner corresponds to the classic image that many people have in mind when they think of street workers. Tattooed, cap and now in summer pants. For two years he has been with the open youth work project, which is active in Pinkafeld and for a year in Oberwart. He seeks contact with the young people, tries to be a contact person. “It’s about talking to them casually, taking them seriously, asking what’s bothering or annoying them,” he says. At the same time, he believes it is important to create free or cheap offers for young people – from joint excursions to gigantic puzzle tournaments. There is also a youth room in Pinkafeld. Many leisure activities are difficult for young people to afford. “Most things cost money,” says Wagner.
