Thousands of people have been evacuated due to flooding in southern Norway. The breach of a dam and the storm “Hans”, which also ravaged Sweden in recent days, are responsible for this.
The storm first caused damage in Sweden and to a lesser extent in Denmark. Finally, 16 landslides and six floods were reported in Innlandet county north of Oslo on Wednesday night. According to the police, more than 600 people have been brought to safety. So far there have been no injuries.
The situation was described as confusing and chaotic. Water entered the Braskereidfoss hydroelectric power station and caused extensive damage. The dam broke, thousands of people had to be brought to safety. The facility is no longer in use and no further action is currently being taken, according to police. “So far it seems that the water diversion through the dam is working well,” Hafslund, operator of the power plant, said confidently. Earlier it was said that an explosion could not be ruled out.
Here you can see photos that show, among other things, a floating house.
Masses of water ripped trees with it
Live recordings from the radio station NRK showed that the water masses next to the power plant tore down several trees and also caused part of the dam to collapse. Emergencies and evacuations were also reported from other places in Norway. In Hemsedal, a cabin was hit by the water masses, which then crashed into a bridge.
Rain was reported again Wednesday evening. Given the current conditions, this could have significant consequences, the country’s Meteorological Institute estimated.
