Southern Norway will be paralyzed by major flooding on Thursday. 125 roads were closed in the morning, including numerous main traffic routes. Landslides and bodies of water also caused damage to several rail lines.
The state-owned company says it could take even longer before trains can run normally again. A railway bridge about 170 meters long in Ringebu municipality suffered serious damage and was in danger of temporary collapse. Their situation seemed to stabilize again on Thursday. Police asked motorists to respect the roadblocks and generally avoid driving in flood and landslide areas.
There have been landslides in several places in recent days and on Wednesday the water masses caused extensive damage to a hydroelectric power station about 120 kilometers northeast of Oslo. So far, countless rivers have burst their banks and several thousand people have had to be rescued, some by helicopters.
Emergency services continued to try to bring the situation under control on Thursday. “The danger is far from over,” Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre warned on Wednesday evening.
