Who wants to sacrifice? – War: Putin’s meat grinder spews out bizarre money

Date:

On average, the average consumer in the poorest regions of Russia earns only a few hundred euros. However, in times like these, families can climb the social ladder relatively “easily” because soldiers make a lot of money in the war in Ukraine. Suppose they risk their lives…

It runs like a red thread through Russian history – the willingness to sacrifice oneself for something or someone. The Russian Orthodox Church also advertises it time and time again. This is also common among the often patriarchally organized families in the largest country in the world in terms of area, where the demands of the older generations to make sacrifices for the family are accompanied by a certain “sense of necessity”, the freedom-loving younger people often make crazy.

“Economist of Death” turns it into a business
Russian President Vladimir Putin knows how to use this to his advantage and turns it into an incredibly cynical deal that Russian economist Vladislav Inosemtsev summarizes as “Putin’s economy of death”. Because: dying in Russia is currently often more lucrative than living. And there are plenty of people who voluntarily lend their heads to give people close to them a “better” life.

Putin’s life insurance policy
A few days ago, the head of the Kremlin signed a decree granting Russian soldiers life insurance. Families of fighters who died or died in Ukraine will receive the equivalent of about 30,000 euros in the future, reports the German news site n-tv. An unimaginable amount, especially for people from the poorer regions, such as Yakutia in the Far East or Buryatia on the border with Mongolia. Because the average salary there is a paltry 400 euros per month.

If you only register for military service, you will already receive 600,000 rubles (about 6,000 euros), says Inosemzew in the podcast “Again we Learned” from ntv.de. Then, when they have fought for half a year, there is still half a million rubles (about 5000 euros). In addition, there is a monthly salary of at least 2000 euros. That is much more money for the Russians than for us Austrians. In the capital of the Russian republic of Buryatia, for example, a nice condominium is available for around 50,000 euros.

A lot of money goes to poorer regions
“People who need money willingly go to battle,” explains Inozemtsev. “Most of the fighters come from the 10 or 11 lowest income regions. Of course, Putin did not want to revive the local economy with the payments, but even key government officials are now talking about the fact that a lot of money is flowing to the poorer regions and new houses and well-paid jobs are being built. built there.”

At the same time, it is a good strategy for Putin to keep the war away from the wealthy people of Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Because the inhabitants of these two metropolises are considered much more spoiled and can sometimes be “angry”. For the time being, people from the “minor” regions of Russia are being put in the meat grinder.

Family members are foaming
If a soldier dies in the war in Ukraine, in addition to the “life insurance” mentioned above, there is also a benefit from the Ministry of Defense of 4.7 million rubles, or about 47,000 euros. And the regional authorities also contribute – namely one million rubles (about 10,000 euros).

In this way, the relatives of a fallen soldier get their money’s worth. If he served six months in the war, then all payments together amount to about 14.8 million rubles, which is about 148,000 euros or three apartments.

No one fights out of conviction
“The compensation paid to the families of the victims is really huge, in some cases even greater than in the United States,” says economist Inozemtsev. “Many people in Russia see these payments and are willing to risk their lives on the front lines.”

The Kremlin probably doesn’t want to see the other side of the coin. Because according to Inosemtsev, the entire Russian army is now a mercenary army. “No one fights for his homeland or for Putin, everyone fights for money. No longer just the troops of (Evgeny) Prigozhin (the head of Wagner’s group, note),’ the expert sums up.
