After the knife attacks on Viennese homeless people, some of which are fatal, there is fear and terror in the streets. While Caritas calls for more solidarity, the National Criminal Investigation Service relies on a dense network of police checks and awareness-raising. Concrete references to the bloody deeds are still scarce!
There is excitement in the homeless scene right now. After the three sneaky knife attacks with one dead and two seriously injured, the local police are feverishly looking for the life-threatening, unknown serial perpetrator. “The pattern of injuries suggests that it could certainly be the same perpetrator as in the other two cases. More information is currently not available,” said police spokeswoman Barbara Gass.
Dense network of controls
The focus of the executive is now on prevention in homeless shelters – information and awareness talks are planned – and a finer network of police checks on crowded sleeping places of homeless people.
In any case, the information received so far has yielded little. “Inspector Coincidence” is still a long time coming.
“Our customers are very aware of the danger”
Meanwhile, the mood is gloomy in the Caritas care center “Gruft”. Susanne Peter, team leader of the street workers of Caritas, explains in an interview with the “Krone” that society is now also important: “Life on the street always brings dangers. Whether it’s heat, cold or even sheer violence I ask the population to take a good look and pay more attention to homeless people and always report suspicious circumstances immediately to the police.”
Currently, those affected want to protect themselves with the simplest tricks. Blankets are used instead of sleeping bags to help them defend themselves more quickly against potential attackers, or to thwart an attack in general. No one is safe anymore, is the sad motto.
