UN report shocks – hacker attacks fund North Korea’s nuclear program

Date:

North Korea evades UN sanctions imposed on it, continues to produce fissile material and develop nuclear weapons. This is evident from an unpublished UN report that Reuters was able to see on Thursday.

Independent sanctions monitors wrote in the report to a UN Security Council committee that North Korean hackers continued to successfully attack cyber cryptocurrencies and other financial exchanges around the world.

Kim’s hackers are getting more and more professional
Hackers worked for North Korea’s main foreign intelligence agency, using increasingly sophisticated cyber techniques to steal money and information. “Companies in the cryptocurrency, defense, energy and healthcare sectors have been particularly targeted,” reads the summary of the report, which is expected to be released in the coming weeks.

The sanctions monitor, which reports twice a year to the UN Security Council, had previously accused North Korea of using money from cyberattacks to fund nuclear and missile programs. North Korea denies this. Neither the United Nations in New York nor the North Korean mission to the UN have yet responded to the report.

Target of US sanctions since 2006
North Korea has been subject to United Nations sanctions since 2006 over its missile and nuclear programs. This includes a ban on the development of ballistic missiles. In recent years, the Council has been divided on how to deal with Pyongyang. Russia and China, who have veto powers alongside the US, Britain and France, have said further sanctions will not help and are calling for measures to be eased.
