At a supermarket in suburban Detroit, Michigan, a woman wanted to buy only fresh spinach – it was wrapped in plastic. She also got something extra with her spinach – a live frog.
Amber Worrick says when she got home her daughter said she saw an animal in the spinach package. The daughter cried out, various American media reported, such as “Fox 2 Detroit”.
Freedom for the frog
A photo of the animal in its unusual habitat appeared in a TV report. The frog would have moved, the woman reports. She returned the organic spinach, including the frog, to the supermarket as quickly as possible – the employees eventually released the frog on the spot. Of course, the American also got her money back.
Jennifer Holton, a spokeswoman for the Michigan Department of Agriculture, told the Detroit Free Press that grocery store employees should not have been allowed to release the frog. Authorities don’t know if the frog is even native to this area. The spokeswoman referred the matter to the US Food and Drug Administration.
“Fresh vegetables of the highest quality”
The spinach growers apologized to Amber Worrick and pledged to continue to provide consumers with “the freshest vegetables of the highest quality” in a statement.
