The salvage of the totally destroyed cars on board the Japanese freighter Fremantle Highway is causing enormous difficulties for the client company. After a thorough inspection, the workers discovered that several decks had practically merged with the cars.
According to the experts, some 2,700 of the approximately 3,800 cars on board have been destroyed and are unlikely to be recovered. “Some decks have completely merged with the cars,” Peter Berdowski, head of salvage company Boskalis, told reporters in Eemshaven, in the northeast of the Netherlands near the German border. Soon the oil will be pumped out of the ship. “As a result, the chance of an environmental disaster is considerably smaller,” says the Boskalis boss.
1000 cars undamaged at first glance
The inspection has now shown that the bottom four of the twelve decks are largely undamaged. At first glance, about 1,000 cars, including 500 electric ones, are in good condition, Berdowski said. But it is still unclear how they can be found.
The Japanese cargo ship was towed to Eemshaven a week ago after the fire had been raging for days. The cause was probably the battery of an electric car. An oil leak threatened the North Sea, the islands and the nature reserves of the Wadden Sea. One person died during the evacuation of the crew.
