The EU has so far supplied about 224,000 shells to Ukraine as part of a plan to supply one million artillery shells to help Ukraine fight Russia. As EU spokesman Peter Stano announced on Friday, member states provided “tank guns, long-range precision-guided munitions, mortar rounds and 2,300 missiles of all kinds”.
The 27 EU member states pledged in March to supply Ukraine with more ammunition and agreed on a €2 billion EU fund package that would allow Ukraine to buy one million shells from individual state stockpiles and joint EU orders. Artillery ammunition must be made available within one year.
With the current delivery, EU countries are still a long way from their target of one million rounds by next spring. For the second part of the delivery plan, the EU defense agency EDA is negotiating joint procurement contracts for 155mm howitzer shells and missiles with European manufacturers.
According to their own statements, since the beginning of the Russian offensive war in Ukraine in February 2023, the EU and its member states have spent a total of about €20 billion on all kinds of arms supplies to Ukraine.
