Faster than the Bavarian police: two sheep slowed down traffic on the A99 near Munich on Sunday afternoon. The animals had escaped from their pasture and were running across the roadway. One of them even used the rescue lane in the wrong direction: “It drove north like a ‘ghost sheep’ about 200 meters,” the police report said.
A motorcycle patrol saw the two escape and tried to drive them back to the embankment. Meanwhile, the fire brigade has secured the highway.
Traffic was halted for 15 minutes
However, it was said that the sheep moved very quickly and purposefully. Traffic on the southbound A99 was completely halted for approximately 15 minutes and then speeds were reduced in both directions.
The sheep eventually parted ways. One found a way to a corn field, the other ran back towards the highway, overcame the concrete sliding wall and used the hard shoulder in the wrong direction as an escape route.
The emergency services could not keep up with the speed of the sheep. The animal then made its way back up the embankment to the greenery “among the amused drivers,” who responded calmly, it said. The owner of the two runaways has been identified and informed.
