Since the Wagner battlegroup moved to Belarus, neighboring Poland has not been able to calm down. After the announcement that significantly more military personnel would be stationed at the border in the future, there were now two arrests in connection with the mercenary group. Apparently, two Russians wanted to recruit soldiers in Poland – they are now accused of espionage.
“The secret service has identified and arrested two Russians who spread Wagner Group propaganda material in Krakow and Warsaw,” Poland’s Interior Minister Mariusz Kaminski said Monday on the online service formerly known as Twitter. “Both have been charged and arrested for espionage, among other things.”
Poland recently warned of possible provocations by the Wagner Group, which is currently stationed in neighboring Belarus. In response, Warsaw announced that it would increase troops on the border between the two countries. Up to 10,000 soldiers will be moved to the border. The defense minister said on Thursday the aim was to deter “the aggressor”.
Poland wants referendum on border fence with Belarus
The situation surrounding the group of mercenaries on the NATO border has long since become a political problem. At the same time as the upcoming parliamentary elections, a referendum will be held on an existing fence on the border with Belarus. While the barrier was being built, there were voices from opposition politicians criticizing the erection of a new fence in Europe.
However, in the current situation, not a single major representative of the Polish opposition questions the fortifications. Nevertheless, the opposition sees tactical reasons behind the referendum. A new parliament will be elected in Poland on October 15. The ruling national conservative party, the PiS, is under pressure from high inflation, strict abortion laws and various nepotism scandals.
