Ukrainian troops are making progress in retaking territory near the disputed Russian-occupied city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine, officials said. “The area of the liberated area was three square kilometers in the past week,” Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maljar said Monday (see video above).
“Our troops advanced towards Bakhmut, more precisely, on the southern flank. Three square kilometers have been liberated in the past week,” said Maljar. According to them, Ukrainian forces have recaptured a total of 40 square kilometers around Bakhmut since the counter-offensive began more than ten weeks ago.
“Very hot fights” for Kupyansk and Lyman
In addition, there is also “very fierce fighting” in the Kharkiv and Luhansk regions on the Kupyansk and Lyman sectors, Maljar said, according to a statement. In the southern part of the Donetsk region, the Ukrainian units have settled in the village of Uroshayne, according to the deputy defense minister.
This was previously recognized by Russian military observers. There is also heavy fighting south of the neighboring town of Staromajorske, which was liberated more than two weeks ago. Maljar has not provided information on land gains.
Advances on the banks of the Dnipro River
The deputy defense minister confirmed advances by Ukrainian units on the Russian-occupied bank of the Dnipro River in the Kherson region. But they hadn’t settled there yet, she made it clear. “To establish yourself, you have to push the enemy away, clear the area,” said Maljar.
Ukrainian media previously released video footage of a Russian major allegedly captured during one of the raids. In the recording he gives detailed information about Russian defense positions.
Ukraine has been fighting off a Russian invasion for more than 17 months, with Western support. A counter-offensive launched some ten weeks ago has so far failed to live up to expectations.
